Continuing professional education
As a member of the Chartered IIA, you are required to maintain and improve your knowledge, skills and other competencies throughout your career. Our CPE policy provides a framework in which to do this.
CPE reporting for members with Global certifications is now open until 31st December. CPE reporting is conducted via your CCMS account, but if you require any assistance please contact membership@charterediia.org.
Revoked designation
Following recent changes to IIA Global’s Annual Certification Renewal Policy, anyone holding a Global designation – including the CIA – will have it “revoked” if they fail to report their CPE for three or more consecutive years. Once an individual’s certification has been “revoked” they can no longer use their designation and their membership class may revert from Voting to Affiliate membership.
If you have had your CIA revoked, then the only way to hold the designation again is to re-enrol on the CIA and resit all three exams. You will not be required to repurchase your tuition, but we strongly recommend that you do so as the syllabus is likely to have changed since your original enrolment.
Alternatively, we will still accept members who have had their CIAs revoked onto the Chartered by Learning program in order to gain Chartered status. If you would like to take up this opportunity, please email membership@charterediia.org for further information.
Please note that Chartered members are required to make a free annual declaration to the Chartered IIA confirming compliance with our CPE Policy. Chartered members who have had their CIAs revoked are likely to be asked to provide their CMIIA CPE to the Charted IIA to ensure compliance. Failure to comply with the Chartered IIA’s CPE Policy may ultimately result in the termination of your membership.
Reporting CPE
Depending on your designation, you are expected to comply with either the Chartered IIA’s CPE policy, or the IIA Global Certification Renewals Policy. It is important that you ensure you are reporting to the correct body as there are important differences between in the two policies.
Members who hold the CIA, either on its own or in combination with another designation, must comply with the IIA Global Certification Renewals Policy and report CPE to IIA Global via CCMS. This is also the case if the second designation is a Chartered IIA designation like CMIIA.
Please download the IIA Global Certifications Renewals Policy and read it carefully. You can also access additional guidance on the IIA Global website.
Members who hold only designations issued by the Chartered IIA (PIIA, CMIIA, QICA) report CPE to the Chartered IIA only.
The benefits of CPE
The benefits of CPE aren’t just felt when you're going for promotion. Many employers now value 'learning agility' as a core competency. The ability and insight to manage your own professional growth is seen as a key strength.
CPE helps individuals:
- Build confidence and credibility: You can see your progression by tracking your learning
- Earn more by showcasing your achievements: It is also a handy tool for appraisals
- Achieve your career goals: By focusing on your training and development
- Cope positively with change: By constantly updating your skill-set
- Be more productive and efficient: By reflecting on your learning and highlighting gaps in your knowledge and experience
How to approach your CPE activity
Via your personal appraisal and development framework
The best way to approach your professional development is to link your CPE requirements to your organisation’s personal appraisal and development framework. That way your CPE plan forms part of your annual development plan, which your organisation is committed to helping you achieve.
Using our core competency framework
If it's not possible to do that, then use the Internal Audit Competency Framework© to identify areas for development and set some objectives.
Collecting evidence
It is very important that you record and collect evidence of your activity so that if you are selected for CPE monitoring, you can submit it easily. You should retain this information for three years.
Collect certificates of attendance for events and training courses
Keep a record of other CPE and get your line manager to sign it off.
Your CPE record should describe the activity that was undertaken together with the number of points claimed. You should also note your aims and objectives, what you learned and how you did or will apply it.
Record your CPE using our CPE record template
Our CPE record template will help you record your activity.
CPE is awarded and recorded in hours, but you may sometimes see the word points used. Broadly speaking, one hour equals one point. There is some flexibility, so an hour is considered to be a minimum of 50 minutes. For example, 100 minutes of activity counts for two points of CPE. We recognise 0.5 CPE points. So 25-30 minutes would count as worth 0.5 CPE points.

CPE for CFIIA, CMIIA, PIIA and QICA holders
If you hold a Chartered IIA designation, like CMIIA or PIIA, then you will report your CPE to the Chartered IIA and you will be asked to declare your compliance to the CPE policy when you renew your membership.
If you hold an IIA Global designation, either on its own or with a Chartered designation, then you will report CPE to IIA Global. You do not need to report CPE to both organisations.
CPE for CIA and QIAL holders
If you hold an IIA Global certification, like CIA, then you should report CPE to IIA Global using CCMS. You must report no later than 31 December.
If you hold an IIA Global designation and a Chartered designation, then you will report CPE to IIA Global. You do not need to report CPE to both organisations.
Details about the IIA Global CPE requirements can be found in the Certification Renewals Policy which members should study very carefully.
Annual reporting requirements
Annual reporting requirements vary depending on whether you are practicing (actively performing internal audit or related activities), non-practicing (not actively performing internal audit or related activities), or retired (no longer in the workforce).

Members who hold both CIA and QIAL need only report 40 or 20 hours, depending on their status.
Retired professionals are exempt from all reporting requirements as long as they remain retired. If you are retired, you will need to submit a support case through the CCMS requesting a status change.
Reporting fee
At the point of reporting on the CCMS, members will be required to pay a fee per designation to IIA Global.
Retired members do not pay an annual fee.
Newly certified or qualified?
For newly certified individuals, the initial reporting period begins on the date of certification and ends 31 December of the following year.
(For example, an individual who obtains a new certification 20 February 2023 may begin earning CPE in 2023 but does not need to report CPE until 31 December 2024.)
Eligible CPE activities
We encourage members to keep a record of their CPE throughout the year, as this will help make it more manageable.
One of the most common ways certified individuals earn CPE hours is by completing educational programmes. Alongside completion of more formal qualifications and training courses, this can include attendance at seminars and conferences, formal in-house training programmes, and self-study programmes.
In order to encourage breadth in activity undertaken, IIA Global has set guidance on the maximum points which can be reported for different activities. Full details can be found in the Certifications Renewals Policy, but the table below shows this at a glance.

Ethics training
All certified members are required to complete two CPE hours annually which are focused on the subject of ethics. The Chartered IIA has a number of online training courses which will enable you to meet this requirement.

On maternity leave or taking a career break?
If you have taken maternity leave during the reporting period (up until 31 December) and you've worked for more than six months of the year, then you will be classed as a 'practising' internal auditor. As such, your CPE hours will be pro-rated, meaning you will be expected to do 3.33 hours for each month worked (40 divided by 12).
If you have worked for less than six months, then you will be classified as 'non-practising' and you can do 1.66 hours per month (20 divided by 12).
If you are unemployed or are taking a career break at the point of reporting your CPE, then you will be classed as 'non practising', which means you need to report 20 hours.
Annual CPE audit
IIA Global annual conduct an audit of CPE reporting records. If you are selected for the audit, then you’ll be required to provide evidence/documentation of the CPE hours you’ve earned. If you fail to provide information by the stated deadline, you’ll automatically be moved to an inactive (grace period) status and may no longer claim that you are certified until such time that you are able to provide your CPE.
